metabolic syndromeSo once again I find the rare time to post something from my busy residency schedule. I hear the word "Metabolic Syndrome" so often that a quick way of remembering the definition criteria became necessary. Think this syndrome everytime you see an overweight individual with central obesity.

Based on the ATP III criteria, Metabolic Syndrome is established if 3 of 5 criteria are met: And what better mnemonic can there be than the word: WEIGHT to remember these criteria ?

WE.IG.H.T

WE = Waist Expanded: More than 40 In (Males) or 35 in (Females)

IG = Impaired Glucose,(Fast.Glucose more than 110mg/dl- ADA recommends 100mg/dl)

H = Hypertension (BP More than 130/85)

H = HDL Low : Less than 50mg/dl for females, less than 40mg/dl for Males

T = TGs More than or equal to 150mg/dl
